progress

Summary: “Human Cloning” written by Esmaeili is opinions paper that tries to convince you that human cloning and all cloning should not be stopped. These paper first talks about the way cloning can help infertile couples. People can use cloning technology to create organs. These organs transplant patients won’t have to fear “rejection” (Esmaeili 3) because it uses their DNA. Cloning research can be used to cure genetic diseases; those who have a high risk for Downs Syndrome can avoid that risk. They might be able to create bone marrow for children and adults who are suffering from leukemia. Some researchers believe they can “cure cancer” (Esmaeili 4).
Commentary: I very much agree with the author. People should be educated about cloning rather that being told that it is against Gods will or that it can become a weapon for countries or other kinds of possible abuses. I don’t believe in stopping cloning. I think that full human cloning should be a goal of scientists. I think that cloning could cure people of genetic diseases, people with burns, and bad organs. Why make those people suffer? This author puts in his paper all topics and supporting details that I would. He says he agrees with full human cloning but he doesn’t support it.
Evaluation: He is credibly. He uses parenthetical citation and has a bibliography at the end of the paper. He writes on a website fully devoted to human cloning. He tells you not to listen to ethos listen to logos. He plays on your pathos by telling you all the diseases you can cure.

Cloning how far do we take it?

November 16th, 2007 by riverofwisdom in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

Summary:  An author in the St. Petersburg Times gives her opinion on cloning en the article “Human Cloning, to What Extent”.  She believes that cloning should not be halted by religious ideology; instead, she thinks cloning should proceed but fall short of entire human beings.  Stem cells could be cloned instead of taking them from fetuses.  The stem cells at least in theory could be used to “grow healthy tissue to treat a variety of diseases including diabetes, strokes, cancer, and Parkinson’s” (“Human Cloning” par.4).  Since the stem cells use the patients DNA the human would be less likely to be rejected by the immune system.  However, many people believe that Congress should outlaw “reproductive cloning” (“Human Cloning” par.6), that is attempting to clone an entire human being.

Commentary: I agree that religious ideals should not stop the progress cloning is making, If Galileo
Galilee had listened to the Catholic Church we would have never learned about the solar system. But I don’t agree with her on the halting of entire human cloning, why stop progress?  I wish the author would have made her opinion more clearly, instead of straddling the fence.

Evaluate:  Because this author is working for a respectable newspaper she must be reliable.  These facts must have been proof read and looked up for correctness.  She tells you about the opposition trying to use ethos to make you do what is “moral right”.  While she tells you to use logos when making your decision you feel pathos by telling you all the people cloning stem cells could help.  She seems she did her homework, I detect no fallacies.

Cloning a cat

October 29th, 2007 by riverofwisdom in Uncategorized · No Comments

Summary: The Copycat of Last Resortin Newsweek talks about cloning endangered animals close to extinction. Dr. Dresser, director of the Aududon Center for Research of Endangered Species and a biologist at the University of New Orleans, believes she and her colleagues have come up with a method of “last resort” to rescue mammals on the brink of extinction.  Dresser says her techniques should be viewed as a “safety net” should more traditional strategies fail.

Commentary: I agree with the author that should be used in certain situations.  If an animal is on the brink of extinction, why not clone it.  Many animals are used by humans to benefit the human race.  For example,  the cow is a large part of the humans diet. We consume its milk and meat daily.  Even medicinal reasons, without horses and pigs and other animals we would not have animals to get insulin from for human diabetes.  All animals are beneficial to the earth in some way.   Think of all the benefits that animals have that we haven’t find and think of all the benefits of extinct animals we have found.  Just think of the possibilities.

Evaluation:  This source is very credible because it is from a very respectable periodical, Newsweek( there is no author).  The opposition to cloning uses ethos to say cloning is immoral an unethical.  While the author, for cloning, uses logos to tell you the benefits of cloning.
